The Peterborough Military History Group is a community of like-minded people, passionate about military history. We have members of all ages, and members interests vary from collectors of military memorabilia such as badges, medals, uniforms, webbing, military equipment and relics of all kinds particularly relating to the world wars. We also have collectors of books, documents and posters and much more. Within our Group are also a number of members who are interested in scale modelling and these often bring examples of their work to show at meetings, and also display their completed models at the annual exhibition.
It is not necessary to be a collector or a modeller to join the Group. We have a number of members who are simply interested in the subject of military history and enjoy reading and learning about it and listening to our speakers on meeting nights.
We are interested in military history from the earliest times through WWI and WWII up to the modern day and are always keen to welcome new members.
We meet at the Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery in Priestgate, Peterborough, PE1 1LF, on the second Wednesday of every month, 7.30pm to 9.30pm. We also hold an annual exhibition at the Museum on one day a year, when members can bring out their collections and show them to the public. This is a good way of advertising the Group and hopefully signing up new members. Here, we also have the Bargain Stall, where members bring their spare model kits, books and various items from their collections to sell and help with fundraising. This year the exhibition takes place on Saturday 2nd November 2024.
Each meeting at the museum includes a speaker, either one of our members, or a guest speaker. We have a refreshment stall where tea, coffee and cakes can be purchased which helps the Group funds. Some members also bring books in to sell at minimal prices so you never know what you might come away with. We have members of all ages and are always looking to recruit more. A monthly Newsletter is emailed to all members and contributions to this are also welcomed.
The monthly meetings follow a usual format whereby members chat with each other on arrival, purchase refreshments and generally have a catch up since the previous meeting. A member usually brings some items from their collection to display on a table so other members can see what they are collecting. Before the speaker starts, another member will stand up for five minutes and discuss an item from their collection which they will have brought with them. This is often a new item they have acquired. The speaker then presents their talk, which will almost always use Powerpoint. Afterwards there is a short period of questions for the speaker, then the evenings wind up.
Annual membership is ?8.00, and subscriptions of ?2.00 are asked for on the night when attending a meeting.
